Victor GlemaudIf you’re thinking: ‘Wait, hasn’t it just been the Met Gala?’ Don’t worry, you’re not living in a fever dream. After being cancelled in 2020, the Met Gala took place last September, returning to its usual spot of the first Monday in May for this year’s ceremony.
The biggest names in showbiz decanted to the Big Apple to celebrate the opening of the second part to The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s In America exhibition, titled An Anthology of Fashion.
With the first instalment serving as a love letter to American fashion and design, 2022’s exhibition looks to stateside prosperity between the late 19th and early 20th century, with guests tasked to dress accordingly for the theme Gilded Glamour. What does that translate to, exactly? Think Old Hollywood glam, opulent frocks, dapper-looking gents and embellishments galore. Luckily, all that wasn’t too difficult to follow, with guests taking to the red carpet in sumptuous dresses and suits.
Unsurprisingly, Kim Kardashian made the most noise of the evening. Not only for the fact she walked the carpet arm-in-arm with new boo Pete Davidson, but for the fact she was a.) back blonde and b.) wearing Marilyn Monroe’s Bob Mackie dress the star wore to sing “Happy Birthday” to JFK in 1962. Pretty impressive stuff. One of the evening’s co-chairs, Blake Lively, also dazzled, this time in Versace gown fit for a princess that transformed live on the red carpet.
It was also a big night for Riccardo Tisci and Burberry, with the designer dressing Nicki Minaj, Naomi Campbell, Kate and Lila Moss, Bella Hadid, Bad Bunny and Irina Shayk. Each look – bar Bad Bunny’s beige boiler skirt suit – came in black, with Shayk morphing into a Tom of Finland-esque leather daddy, Mama Moss donning a tuxedo dress and Minaj in a frothy frock and baseball cap combo. The Gucci gang had a home run, too: from Billie Eilish‘s corseted Gucci gown made of upcycled materials, through to Jessica Chastain‘s ruby red number and Alessandro Michele and Jared Leto‘s twinning moment.
Other standout moments included former 10 cover star Erykah Badu in Marni, Janelle Monáe in Ralph Lauren, Kendall Jenner in Prada, Lizzo in Thom Browne, Sarah Jessica Parker in Christopher John Rogers and SZA in Vivienne Westwood. As always, Cynthia Erivo looked regal in Louis Vuitton, Maude Apatow appeared to be pulled straight out of The Great Gatsby in Miu Miu, and Megan Thee Stallion rose like a phoenix in a golden, feathered Moschino dress.
Once again, many of the men last night abandoned the stuffy black tuxedo for more radical looks. Like a red-gloved Kodi Smit-McPhee, who wore a shirt and jeans from Matthieu Blazy’s Bottega Veneta debut, which were actually both made of leather. Evan Mock was terrific in a sorbet yellow Head of State get-up and both Gunna and Jordan Roth pulled through in Thom Browne ensembles. A delightful trend from the evening was the gents who gave homage to the late André Leon Talley by wearing capes, including Kid Cudi in Kenzo, Questlove in Zegna and Alton Mason in Prada, as nothing truly says glamour like channelling Mr Leon Talley himself.
