Last night, stars came from far and wide to attend the Met Gala in New York. After the last two iterations of the annual event were forced to be cancelled in the face of Coronavirus, the star-studded red carpet at Monday evening’s glamorous shindig showcased a pent-up desire to get out and dress up again.
Celebrating the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition In America: A Lexicon of Fashion – an all-out love letter to American fashion of today, curated by Andrew Bolton – emerging design talent like Harris Reed, Christopher John Rogers, Conner Ives and Area all found their place on the red carpet – by way of Iman, Eva Chen, Natalia Bryant and Simone Biles.
As much as last night was a celebration of the new school, American greats – from Ralph Lauren and Oscar De La Renta through to Rick Owens and Thom Browne – each provided some of the evening’s standout looks, whether it be Owens’ crimson red ensemble for Spanish singer Rosalia or Browne’s kinky get-up for Gossip Girl star Evan Mock.
And who could count out the big hitters? Demna Gvasalia’s Balenciaga was a popular choice of the night, worn by Rihanna, Michaela Coel, and a face-less Kim Kardashian. As was Versace, who crafted a three-in-one look for global superstar Lil Nas X.
It was a joyous return to IRL fashion, one that was bold, beautiful and totally brilliant.
